Dear Solei 2019

1316_6892Dear Solei,

I blinked and 9 years have gone by in an instant, so it seems.  9 amazing years with you being an extension of my consciousness, souls working in harmony and dancing through the courses as one.  Now our time running in the ring together is coming to a close. Livers are stupid things that need to be made to last longer and there are other adventures awaiting us!  Reflecting on the letter I wrote you 9 years ago before your first competition, there are some things I want you to know.

While I never expected perfection, you have been the definition of it. I made more than my share of mistakes, but you always graciously forgave me. We moved on together and with me a little better and wiser.  You have had my back all the times when I was a crappy handler. From our first trial together to all our trips overseas, I was able to put 100% faith in the skills you knew. That is a freedom and a thrill I hope everybody gets to experience at least once in their life with an agility partner.

There are always highs and lows, but you have given me so many more highs!  My favorite moments with you were the victory laps we got to take together. Your anticipation would build up, your bark would reach a new pitch and then we would hear our names announced and just race around the ring!   It isn’t the medals we won or the podiums we have stood on that are stamped on my heart, but those moments of celebration after we got the job done.

What we have accomplished far exceeded my silly goals and dreams of 9 years ago.   After our first trip to WAO in 2012, I put a reminder on my phone to “Hug my gold medal girl” every morning.  It is still there and always will be. We may not have anymore victory laps in our future, but I promise to make every day we have together a celebration!

With much love and gratitude,

Your Mom.
